The Alaska Army National Guard was awarded the 2009 Environmental Restoration Award for an Installation by the National Guard Bureau in recognition of our environmental program, which in the last two years has successfully cleaned up 11 sites in Western Alaska working with our preferred contractor, [Ahtna]. As the largest, most northern and least populated state, Alaska’s distance, lack of infrastructure, and extremely short season for fieldwork can make it challenging to get the job done, with 75% of sites located off the road network, requiring site access only by air or sea. [Ahtna] performed exceptionally in dealing with the ultimate test in logistics presented by these remote sites, directly contributing to the success of this program.
